Indian Ratnagiri Estate 225G - NEW

This delicious coffee is grown at around 1500m above sea level on the Ratnagiri Estate, which is located near Chikmagalur in the Karnataka region of South West India. The Hindi word 'Ratnagiri' means quite literally 'Pearl Mountain' , which is a reference to the dense silver oak trees which grow on the hillside providing shade in and around the Ratnagiri Estate. Ratnagiri was established in 1920 and is owned and operated by Ashok Patre, having been passed down from grandfather to father to son.

Ashok is passionate about driving forward the quality of the coffees produced, and being well travelled he has drawn inspiration from visiting renowned farms around the world in order to learn both new processing techniques and how to restore biodiversity. This has enabled him to push beyond traditional Indian coffee cultivation and processing techniques, and he now includes natural, honey and fermentation processing experiments alongside traditional washed processing, and he is helping pioneer India's drive towards world class Speciality Coffee. Ashok is also passionate about the environment, and the estate is home to one of the world's richest biodiversity hotspots. He uses organic fertiliser and compost to fertilise trees which are grown under 50% shade cover, which he believes is the best way to minimise fungal infection whilst improving coffee quality. The farm is fed by two freshwater streams, and there is a strict protocol for processing the wastewater and releasing it back into the environment. The estate is a lush, shaded environment and is said to have over 48 recorded bird populations, monkeys, leopards, wild boar, tigers, mongoose, and occasionally elephants ! At 117 acres Ratnagiri is essentially a large organic / biodynamic farm, and it maintains Rainforest Alliance Certification.

The coffee undergoes the Natural process. After picking the cherries (for which Ashok pays a premium, picking only the ripe red cherries) they are fermented in stainless steel fermentation tanks with a yeast invigorator for three days, before drying for two weeks. The resulting flavour delivers a smooth, sweet and delicious coffee.

The flavour profile is of Peach, Stone Fruit and Honey.

Medium-Dark Roasted, this coffee can be brewed through a Bean-to-Cup machine, as an Espresso, or can also be brewed as a Filter or Cafetiere coffee.
