This coffee comes from the island of Flores, located at the eastern end of a belt of volcanic islands sandwiched between mainland Indonesia and Australia. The town of Bajawa is located in the middle of the island, and is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, natural hot springs and forestlands.
Indosesia was the first place outside of Ethiopia and the Arabian peninsular to cultivate coffee. Arabica was replaced by hardier Robusta after a bout of leaf rust desease in the late 19th century, and today around 25% of coffee plantations are dedicated to Arabica.
The Nola Wonga farmers group was created in 2014 by Mr Felix Soba in the highlans of Bajawa, to preserve the region's heritage with the cultivation of its renowned Arabica coffee. As many farmers began shifting to short term crops like cabbages and cucumbers, Felix stepped in and offered practical support, distributing free seedlings and showing farmers how to grow coffee alongside horticultural crops rather than replacing them. The results are higher incomes from coffee, better job opportunities and a renewed focus on quality and sustainability across the group's farms.
This coffee is grown at 1500m above sea leve,l and it is processed in a traditional washed method. The cherries are placed in water, floaters removed, and then pulped and fermented in concrete tanks before washing. This helps highlight the fresh, clean and complex flavours that coffee from the island of Flores is known for. Indonesian coffees are often noted for their deep, rich fruity flavours, and this coffee is no exception.
The cup profile is a lovely combination of Syrup, Elderflower and Pomelo (sweet grapefruit).
This coffee is Medium-Dark roasted, so it can be brewed as a Filter/Cafetiere coffee, or brewed through a Bean-to-Cup machine as a slightly milder Espresso brew.
