This coffee is grown high in Rwanda's lush hills by the women of Aberteraninkunga Ba Sholi Co-operative. Rwanda has been referred to as "the land of a thousand hills", and Muhanga district where this coffee is grown is no exception. With rolling mountains, rich soils and plentiful sunshine, it is an exceptional coffee-growing area. 

Aba Sholi Co-op is located in the Cyeza sector, Muhanga district, in central Rwanda. It was established in 2008 by 30 women in order to invigorate the local economy. Abateraninkunga is a Kinyarwanda word which translates as "mutual assistance", which encapsulates their values and encourages more farmers to join. Today there are 610 farmers, many of them women, growing coffee at altitudes of between 1800 and 2000m above sea level. Sholi can boast that over one third of its members are women, with two serving on a five member board of directors. The Co-op became Fairtrade in 2015, and in the same year won the Rwanda Cup of Excellence Award. In 2014 Aba Sholi opened its own washing station where members can deliver their cherries for washing. 

Following the establishment of the Sholi Co-operative the changes have been quite miraculous. Firstly there was a large increase in the local population, as people moved from high risk areas to the settlement area. Sholi brought jobs to the community, and with that better living conditions and reliable income to pay for school fees and medical insurance. As part of the vision to help build the community, the Sholi Co-op built a health centre, a water source and a village hall which can be accessed by everybody including non-members.

This fully washed Red Bourbon varietal delivers a vibrant, fresh and refined flavour. The Cup Profile is light bodied and clean, with fruity and citrus flavours - so think Apple, Lemon and Cranberries, with a Honey sweetness and a Black Tea finish.

Medium-Dark roasted, this coffee offers a delicious Filter or Cafetiere coffee, but also can be brewed as a milder Espresso and works well through a Bean-to-Cup Machine.
